Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such drugs must be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
