Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical biological terror, but beneath Together lies a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters face the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
