The English and Welsh Pitted Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by sporting legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

England and Wales have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the English team's shock early exit.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

The Irish and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group once again, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland secured a 36-14 win, with their opponents unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in France, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and world number one the Springboks before the final, presuming the South Africans win their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

If the pools conclude according to the current world rankings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both England and Ireland until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster fixture designed to launch the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – probably the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
