The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team could be designing a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
