The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of the former president's move to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. The current president was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
