Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages down to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "Including them were numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
